Peak Performance: Training and recovery

I’ve talked about training and recovery a few times before but here is another go at it.

I recently came across a guy named Paul Chek. He has many videos and material talking about the complete body.

In one video he talks about rest and recovery, breaking it down into three different methods. Active rest, passive rest, and total rest. The title of the video is (Work Hard ~ Rest Hard)

Active rest being the sport related mechanics with less intensity and volume. In grappling this might be just drilling. Passive rest is movement outside the sport, like swimming or going for a walk. Total rest being doing absolutely nothing. Chilling at home.

On the flip side Paul Chek cites Charlie Francis and talks about going into a training session with the intention to make 1-3% improvement. Its an interesting concept that probably goes against most traditional methods of training. In the game of grappling where we aren’t dealing with numbers like weights, throwing an object, or jumping over an object this can be especially tricky.

In general, it sounds very important to individualize things. Athletes need to monitor their potential thresholds before every training session and mindfully craft their routine accordingly.
