Grammar Point: ～そうです (I heard that / It looks like)
In the manga, we see:
長年(ながねん)最下位(さいかい)争(あらそ)いの常連(じょうれん)だそうじゃないか
“I heard they’ve been regulars in the fight for last place for years, haven’t they?”
Here, ～そうだ is used in the hearsay sense (not the “looks like” sense).
Meaning: “I heard that…” / “They say that…” Pattern: [Sentence in plain form] + そうだ
Examples:
先生(せんせい)は明日(あした)来(く)るそうです。 “I heard the teacher is coming tomorrow.”
東京(とうきょう)はにぎやかだそうです。 “I heard Tokyo is lively.”
Genki Connection
This grammar appears in Genki II, Lesson 17: 「～そうです」 (Hearsay: I heard that…)
Before そうです we need to use the short form. In using the short form we need to check what happens to the nouns and な adjectives. In this case you will use だ with both nouns and なadjectives. Watch out mixing this grammar point with a very similar: stem form +そうです。When you use the stem form instead of the short form, you will be stating how something appears instead of repeating information your previously heard. Ex: おいしそうです
