Japanese Physical Culture: Best Judo demo

One of my favorite martial arts demonstrations is this Judo performance in Europe. I really enjoy their performance because it’s a blend of all the things possible.

Each section is like a chapter on the “potential force” of Judo as a sport and martial art.

The first chapter is slow and controlled, showing the details and control required to accomplish technique. The second chapter is the exact alternative of dynamic, explosive power. Although the two are contrasting strengths, the performance shows that both are developed through the practice of Judo. The third chapter is more humorous in nature but just as important, showing one of the biggest concepts in Judo, the push and pull. I really appreciate this “humans connected by a string” analogy because it shows how significant the grips function in the sport. The final chapter is a mix of gymnastics and Judo technique. It’s a great finale to conclude the performance with excitement. Almost like the end of a firework show.

The music ties everything together, reinforcing the message being sent in each chapter. It would have been easy to simply find a popular or catchy tune. Instead, music was carefully selected to support the theme of each chapter.

I’ve seen a few demo performances and in my opinion, this is up there as one of the top three among the grappling arts.
