"Lady Sanshiro" appeared with a quiet presence to the Yama no ue Hotel, where our interview would take place. Three years ago I invited her as a guest to "Haiku-Kai" a discussion I hosted at the at the beginning of the summer. Not to talk about Haiku. When you look at Yamaguchi's past, you might get the impression that she is an intense person but that wasn't the case at all. And even if she is intense, it's not her constant state, getting mad when appropriate, a person with focused guide when directing her energy. Both with very similar circumstances!? Getting right into it, "Being in the Judo community, it must be difficult to speak what's on your mind. What sense to you get as a reaction?" Yamaguchi answered. "There are pros and cons. Naturally there are people who support me and people who are critical. What's strange is that neither opinion comes directly back to me. Perhaps they're just being hands off or making observations. Regardless of what I say, it's the non Judo community that usually responds, and the Judo community remains reticent. Like... We don't want to associate too much, we're avoiding eye contact (lol). There's an image that Judo is macho and strong, but there's quite a few chickens. They don't want to fight face to face." It must be impossible to ignore the accolades of Yamaguchi. The first Japanese woman to win Gold at the 1984 Judo World Championships and Bronze at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Currently, associate professor at Tsukuba University, Board of directors for Japan Olympic Committee, and an administrator for Japan Judo Federation. When I asked, "because she speaks plainly about things, is there an unspoken agreement not to giver Yamaguchi-san a position within the Judo community?" Yamaguchi answered, "I don't think so. They're most likely afraid of completely cutting ties as well. There's always the possibility to go completely wild when left alone on its own. If the leash is too short there's a possibility of being bit, so the leash has to be a little longer. Nevertheless, still connected is how I'm positioned within the community," said laughing. I responded, "it seems you've been placed in a similar circumstance as I am in," as we shared a laugh. I pushed them to speak up In the previous London Olympics, Yamaguchi was regarded as the one pulling strings behind the scenes in a power harassment controversy by the Women's Judo coach. In the end, she nudged them from the back to file the claim on their own. "You all started Judo because you wanted to become strong right? Then why can't you stand up for yourself."

“女三四郎”山口香の直言
“女三四郎”は静かなたたずまいで、対談会場の山の上ホテルに現れた。三四郎は言うまでもなく、柔道小説の主人公である姿三四郎の三四郎で、3年前の初夏に私がホストの『俳句界』の対談にゲストとして彼女を頼んだのだった。俳句の話をするためではない。山口は経歴などを見れば、激しいひとという印象を受けるが、そうではなかった。たとえそうであっても、いつも激しいわけではなく、怒るべき時に怒るわけで、エネルギーを集中させるのである。
お互いすごく似た境遇!?
「柔道界の中にいて山口さんのように、はっきりと発言をするのは大変なのではないかと思うんですが、リアクションはどんな感じですか」と切り出すと、山口はこう答えた。
「賛否両論あります。応援してくれる人がいれば、批判的な人も当然おられます。でも不思議なことに、どちらの意見も直接私に向かって来ないんですよ。様子見というか、あまり触れないようにしているというか。何かを発言しても、柔道界以外からのリアクションが多くて、柔道界の人は静観しているんです。あまり関わらないよ、目も合わせないよ、みたいな（笑）。柔道というと、マッチョで強いイメージがあるんですが、意外とチキンが多いんですよ。面と向かって喧嘩できない」
1984年の世界選手権で日本女性として初の金メダルを取り、88年のソウル五輪で銅メダルを獲得した山口の実績を無視できないということもあるだろう。現在は筑波大学准教授で、日本オリンピック委員会理事、全日本柔道連盟監事を務める。
「いろいろ直言するから、山口さんに柔道界でポストを与えないようにしよう、みたいな雰囲気はあるんですか」と尋ねると、山口は、「そんなこともないですよ。おそらく、切ってしまうのも恐いんですよね。野放しにしてしまうと、本当に勝手に暴走してしまう危険もあるので。短い紐だと噛みつかれる危険性があるから、ちょっと長めの紐で、でも繋いでいる、くらいの与え方です」と笑った。それで、「私とすごく似た境遇に置かれていますね」と笑い合った。
声をあげよと選手の背を押す
前回のロンドン・オリンピックで、女子柔道の監督が選手にパワハラをやった問題で、山口は選手の黒幕視されたが、最後は自分たちで訴えなきゃ、と彼女たちの背を押したという。
「あなたたちは強くなりたくて柔道を始めたんでしょ。それなのに、どうして主張できないの」
