Robert “Bobby” Weaver was an Olympic alternate in 1976 while still in high school. Needless to say he showed great promise from a very young age.
After graduating from high school, he went on to wrestle at Lehigh University. Two years after graduating from high school he won silver in the 1979 world championships held in San Diego, CA. Not many coaches recruited him to wrestle in college because they felt he was too small to be competitive, even at the lightest weight class.
Weaver battled to make weight in a different way than most of his competitors. Unlike others dropping 20lb or more to make weight, he struggled to stay heavy enough in his weight class. In his battles on the mat, Weaver beat his Soviet rival Sergei Kornalaev 5 of 8 bouts.
In his post 1980 life he received a BA in social relations and BS in finance from Lehigh. In 1984, he had another opportunity as an Olympian and won Gold. That was the end of his competitive wrestling career.
Post wrestling, he went into banking for 5 years. However he transitioned into teaching mat at Phillipsburg middle school and being an assistant coach at Phillipsburg high wrestling.
