The passing of Anton Geesink by Yamaguchi Kaori

The 1964 Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Anton Geesink (Netherlands), who beat Kaminaga Akio (deceased) in the open weight division, passed away on the 27th at a hospital in the Netherlands. He was 76.

It was a bitter loss for Japan at the Tokyo Olympics, but not a stretch to say that his victory at the first Olympic event led to the spread of Judo across the world. He showed a deep respect and understanding for the spirit of Judo as he waved off others from jumping onto the mat at the moment of his victory.

I recently watched a video of the 1956 Tokyo World Championships and 1961 Paris World Championships, where the handsome and elegantly postured Geesink performed his beautiful Judo.

I send my prayers from the bottom of my heart.

For those that have never seen Anton Geesnik, Here is a video of his performance in the Olympic finals. The video captures the moment Yamaguchi Kaori talks about,  where he is waving his teammates to stay off the mat at the moment of his victory.

    Very exciting and moving.
It is important to remember the great and the not so great things people do.
