I saw the Team Alpha Male line up for quintet Las Vegas. More like an All Star Team in my opinion.
Quintet brings the team concept seen in Japanese high school Judo or Kosen Judo at the university level. The basic format is if you get a submission you stay in to fight the next guy. A match that ends without a submission means both competitors are out. This rule concept brings out the need to get the submission but also the need to stop a submission and end the match in a draw. If your “point getter” you anticipate to get 2 or 3 submissions is stopped with a first round draw, that’s a big blow to winning the team of 5 battle.
Back in the day of Metamoris super fights, the commentators made a big deal about the art of not getting submitted. It seemed silly to praise a competitor who tried their best not to be submitted by stalling. The objective of the 1 vs 1 fight is to win, not to avoid being submitted.
However, the quintet is different. In a submission only team competition, you need two types of competitors. The subbers and stoppers. You need someone that can go and get 2 or 3 submissions but you also need someone that can stop the person on the other team that can submit 2 or 3 opponents.
Can’t wait to watch Quintet Las Vegas!
