Jiu Jitsu improvement is like debate improvement

You know those moments right after you had an argument with someone and you couldn’t say all the right things? You go back over the conversation in your mind and re-argue the points but with more time to think and say what you really should have said…. You know you lost this time, but next time if there ever is a next time, you’ll have all the right comebacks.

That’s how you get better at jiujitsu.

Thinking about the details of the conversation, re-thinking your rebuttal, going over the conversation again and again with a precise counter strike, that’s exactly how you should approach reflecting on a practice roll or tournament roll. Thinking about what you should have done is just as important as thinking about how you got stumped. Consider the details of the match or roll like you would the words you and the other person said. Come up with how you’re going to answer those statements and it should be a different conversation the next time around.
