At El Dorado Hills Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, new black belts teach their first seminar on the day of their belt promotion. I’m not sure if other schools do that but we started this tradition a few years ago and I really enjoy the experience. Yesterday, 6/19/19, Dave taught his first seminar as a black belt. How awesome is that!?!
It was cool to meet his friend Keith, who introduced him to jiujitsu back in 2005. (Now they are both black belts)
I was thinking, there are many ways to interpret what it means to have or be black belt. Perhaps a master of the art, a magician, or maybe a ninja… Through my experiences, a black belt has figured out the superpower of learning. They understand the process, the practice, the focus, and the patience to understand how they learn. The power of a black belt isn’t necessarily in what they already know. Their strength is in learning! Black belts make mistakes and fix them. They know what is good, great, and what is garbage. They see opportunity for improvement and act on it. They understand that each day lived in their practice, gives them strength.
Congrats Dave! I look forward to continue learning with you!
